Stravinskij Salon: A Spatial Experience

The Stravinskij Salon, deeply rooted in Wellington’s hair and beauty culture, traces its origins back to the visionary Constantin Harach and the establishment of the original salon in 1991. With its rich history, the salon has been synonymous with innovation in hair and beauty treatments. Now, undergoing a transformation, the reincarnated Stravinskij brand aims to redefine the spatial and atmospheric experience for its patrons at a new location, while honoring its heritage.

Design Concept: Aotearoa-inspired Materiality

Stravinskij Salon: A Spatial Experience

Grounded in the sustainable ethos of the Stravinskij brand, the design draws inspiration from the natural landscapes of Aotearoa. Textures, colors, and tones reminiscent of the meeting of dark rock and water, the interplay of sunlight and breaking clouds, and the deep greens of native flora permeate the salon’s ambiance. Contrasts in light, materiality, and texture create dynamic interior spaces, evoking a sense of serenity and connection to the natural environment.

Site Integration: Crafting a Tranquil Oasis

Situated on Wellington’s bustling Featherston Street, the salon’s design seamlessly integrates with its urban context. Floor-to-ceiling glass floods the space with natural light, offering a serene contrast to the city’s hustle and bustle. To enhance the relaxation experience, a secluded ‘cave-like’ area was created at the rear of the salon, providing a private retreat for hair washing and intimate treatments amidst the urban backdrop.

Material Selection and Construction: Elevating the Experience

Upon entering Stravinskij, clients are enveloped in a tranquil atmosphere, transitioning from the city’s vibrancy to a moment of calm. Deep green velvet drapes and a dark textured ceiling create a cozy reception and retail area, while Timaru Bluestone pavers ground the space with their natural allure. Crafted stainless steel mirror units and retail shelves add a touch of elegance, juxtaposing the rugged beauty of the Bluestone. The salon’s sustainable ethos is evident in its use of locally sourced materials and its commitment to recycling and environmental conservation.

Client Experience: Journey of Relaxation

The salon’s design is meticulously choreographed to guide clients through a journey of relaxation and rejuvenation. From the warm reception area to the dimly lit hair spa, each space is designed to cocoon clients in tranquility. Moss-toned leather seats and charcoal timber accents create an inviting ambiance, while the sound of running water soothes the senses during treatments. Sustainability is not just a design principle but a fundamental aspect of the salon’s ethos, with initiatives focused on recycling, environmental stewardship, and promoting the health and well-being of both clients and staff.

As the Stravinskij Salon embodies the spirit of rejuvenation and sustainability, it serves as more than just a beauty destination—it is a sanctuary for the mind, body, and soul.
