Reimagining Simple Living: Atelier Hawkesbury
In the early 1990s, Richard Leplastrier found solace on the shores of Lovett Bay, where the Hawkesbury River meets the sea. Embracing a philosophy of simple living, Leplastrier penned a poetic description of his dwelling: “The house continues a history of simple living on the site, which I suspect has continued for thousands of years (…) Our family of five lives comfortably in this one room. The small room we inhabit, in turn, inhabits a greater room whose walls are cliffs and floors the tidal level of the bay that rises and falls nearly two meters every six hours.”
Echoes of History: Building Along the River
Atelier Hawkesbury stands as a testament to this ethos, nestled along the banks of the Hawkesbury River. Accessible solely by water, the project embodies resource efficiency and harmonizes with the natural landscape. Resting against sandstone rocks, the lightweight structure is constructed entirely from locally sourced 1″ by 1″ wood joists and studs. Its sprawling, staggered roof offers protection from the elements while allowing natural light to permeate the interior.
A Dance of Light and Nature
Translucent polycarbonate sheets envelop the luminous interior, fostering a seamless connection with the surrounding forest and ever-changing light. The stone cliffs, guardians of the land for generations, seamlessly integrate into the house, blurring the lines between structure and landscape. As the river whispers its tales, Atelier Hawkesbury stands as a modern ode to simplicity and symbiosis with nature.
Atelier Hawkesbury is not merely a structure but a testament to the enduring relationship between humanity and the environment, embodying the spirit of humble living amidst the grandeur of nature.
