Embracing Craftsmanship: Arts & Science Store

Arts & Science, renowned for its commitment to “high-quality everyday life,” envisioned a new store in Fukuoka, meticulously curated to showcase an array of meticulously crafted products. Nestled in a tranquil residential area near Ohori Park, the store’s design pays homage to both the client’s philosophy and the surrounding environment.

Drawing Inspiration from Tradition

Ohori Park, steeped in history and beloved by Fukuoka’s residents, served as a muse for the store’s design. Drawing inspiration from the reddish-brown tiles adorning the Fukuoka City Art Museum within the park, the design team sought to capture the timeless elegance and craft-like beauty of these tiles. Symbolizing the area’s heritage, these tiles became the cornerstone of Arts & Science Store’s aesthetic.

Fusion of History and Modernity

Housed within a 1970s-era corner apartment building reminiscent of the nearby art museum, the store’s interior design revolves around a central frame wall. Replicating the texture and application of the museum tiles, known as “quarter joint” tiles, this wall serves as a symbolic expression of the store’s identity. Flexibility was paramount, with sliding doors incorporated to facilitate seamless transitions between exhibitions and merchandise displays.

Functional Elegance

The design prioritizes functionality without compromising elegance. A purpose-built partition wall creates a relaxed shopping environment, doubling as a show window from the street and a recessed shelf from the interior. The meticulous use of tiles extends beyond wall finishes, defining dimensions for fixtures and display elements. This modular approach imbues the space with versatility while maintaining a delicate aesthetic.

Harmonious Integration

Externally, the store seamlessly blends with its surroundings through the use of white ricin spray finish, mirroring the existing building’s aesthetic. The same tiles adorning the interior are applied to the exterior floor, forging a visual connection with Ohori Park. This harmonious integration fosters a sense of unity, creating a space that resonates with the park’s ambiance while offering a tranquil retreat for visitors.

Arts & Science Store stands as a testament to the fusion of tradition and modernity, craftsmanship, and functionality. By embracing the rich heritage of its locale, the store not only honors the past but also sets a new standard for contemporary retail design.
